If you’re in the process of planning yourholiday to Laos its important to understand that the country’s riches extend far past the tourist hotspots of Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng. Although undoubtedly worth a visit, the most alluring thing about Laos is that much of it remains off the typical tourist radar. Today we outline five of the most unmissable activities that you can enjoy, away from the crowds.
1 – MAHOUT TRAINING
Maybe you’ve ridden an elephant before, but do you actually know how to ride one? Well, now you can learn! Just outside of Luang Prabang are a number of elephant camps where you can undergo Mahout training. Courses range from one to four days in length.
2 – TREK TO REMOTE KATANG VILLAGES
If it’s the more mysterious side of Laos that has enticed you here, we recommend hiking out to the Katang Villages of the Dong Phu Vieng National Protected Area. Journey through the region’s sacred forests to reach traditional villages that have remained untouched by the outside world.
3 – VIENG XAI’S BOMB SHELTER CAVES
It was in this incredible “Cave of Victory” that 20,000 people soughtshelter during the Vietnam War. Throughout the network of 450 caves, the residents built markets, hospitals, and even a theatre. Take a tour to seethe remaining signs of its wartime past.
4 – THE 100 WATERFALL TREK
From the sleepy village of Nong Khiaw, set out on one of Laos’ most fun, and beautiful treks. The region is home to hundreds of waterfalls that you get to scramble up during the trek. Fear not, the majority of the falls aren’t enormous.It’s the sheer numberthat makes this trek so memorable.
5 –THAM KONG LO CAVE
Where else are you likely to see a cave that’s 7km long, and up to 300ft high in some places? This enchanting cave is one of Laos’ most unusual hidden gems. Hop in a small boat to explore the cave by water, orexplore on foot to navigate those more tricky corners.
