Komodo Island is perhaps one of the most popular island destinations in the world. This location is renowned for unbridled adventure, unique and exotic species, lush landscape, as well as beautiful corals. Perhaps even more captivating than these features are the Komodo dragons, which can only be found on the island. These ancient creatures have been fascinating scientists and ordinary folk for more than a hundred years ever since they were discovered on the Island by an expedition group in the early1900s.
In order to gain the most from your trip to Komodo Island, you need to plan accordingly. The tips below will help you with the planning process.
- Determine your preferred route
Komodo Island is located deep within the Sunda islands, and it is impossible to access the island directly using an international flight. If you are taking an international flight, you can choose to land in Bali or Jakarta. From either of these two cities, you can take a domestic flight to Komodo Airport, otherwise known as Labuan Bajo, and from there you can take local means of transport to the island.
A flight from Bali to Labuan Bajo only takes an hour, while a domestic flight from Jakarta to the same location will take approximately two and a half hours.
You can also choose to backpack from Lombok to the island, which usually takes a couple of days.
- Carry the right clothes
When selecting the clothes you will pack for the journey to the island, be sure to consider the current weather conditions of the island as well as the activities you will undertake while you are there. The island experiences tropical climate but due to its small size, expect the weather to reach scorching levels. Hence, it is essential that you pack clothes suitable for this type of climate.
Furthermore, exploring the island usually requires a significant amount of trekking through hills and wild vegetation. It is thus essential that you pack clothes suitable for this specific purpose. Mountain sandals or a light and airy pair of sneakers would be perfect for the island activities. Carry cotton clothes as these are more than capable of effectively absorbing the sweat.
It is also highly recommended to wear a hat every time you are outside under direct sunlight as the sun can be extremely hot. Be sure to pack one in advance in order to protect your head from the extreme heat.
- Sunblock is essential
As mentioned above, the temperatures on the island can reach scorching levels during certain days. You need to bring with you an adequate supply of sunblock, preferably one with the highest SPF. This will help protect your skin from sunburns as well as from the sun’s harmful UV rays.
- Select the right time of year for the trip
When planning a trip to the island, it is important to note that you can expect to see different things depending on the month that you are visiting. This is because the attractions vary depending on the month of the year. The features that you are interested in seeing should dictate the month that you will select to make the trip.
For instance, if you are interested in diving under calm sea conditions, or would like to explore the island’s landscape when it is majestically green, then the best time to visit the island would be between the months of April and June. September to November are ideal months for spotting beautiful and highly exotic marine life.
It is recommended to book your trip to the island during the off peak season, as the peak season attracts hoards of tourists to the island. However, if you enjoy being in the company of many beautiful strangers in one place, and would like to meet many new people, then visit during the peak months, which is usually between July and August.
